Garden Landscaping; Cardiff

A friend told a story about his North Park house, and how once he finally landscaped his front yard, his neighbors became much more friendly. I experienced a similar scenario this weekend, when we filled the empty eyesore in front of our house with bright fresh greenery. We must have met a half dozen neighbors, chatted with dog walkers and stroller pushers and even got solicited for design advice.

Having zero experience with gardening and not knowing the first thing on planning or caring for plants, we aimed for a simple and low maintenance solution. We began by measuring our garden and plotting out height and width for a general idea. We then shopped between Home Depot and the local Encinitas, Sunshine Gardens for an array of plants. Home Depot supplies great basics and filler plants, while Sunshine staff is so helpful and has a great selection of what I consider the 'statement plants.' We paid attention to amount of sunlight required, drought resistance, and color scheme. We ended up chosing: dwarf papyrus, red cordyline, pennisetum fireworks, orange New Zealand sedge, and Russian sage . Piling up a truck bed's worth of greenery, we returned home to get dirty.

We laid out all the pots in the positions we had sketched and took a step back to assess. For the most part, we were surprisingly good at our estimations. We cut through the weed blocker, dug holes and covered the space with mulch. After about two hours of labor, we were complete. With the added touch of some solar lights, we were proud of our finished product.

However, as with many first attempts, there will be lessons learned. Ours: be sure to check how tall and wide each mature plant will grow, and adjust your layout accordingly. I have a feeling that the dwarf papyrus will get a new spot in the backyard, as the sage will eventually grow into large bushes. You live, learn and have fun getting dirty!

Chicken & Snap Peas Asian Noodle Salad

It has finally felt like summer arrived in San Diego, albeit quite late. But, the high temperatures, for a moderate region, has led to evenings spent lingering on my patio (sans jacket). For a light, flavorful and delicious dish, I adapted a Bon Apetit recipe for an Asian Noodle Salad. With easy preparation, this would be a great dinner to serve to guests. Served after a steamed edemame appetizer, and paired with a crisp Pinot Grigio, it was the perfect summer meal!

Ingredients:
- grilled chicken breasts, slices into thin strips (can also make with tofu)
- leeks, sliced thin
- snap peas
- udon (if you can't find this japanese style noodle, spaghetti can work)
- mango dressing (recipe below)
- sesame seeds
- mango, sliced
- cayenne pepper, s&p, sesame oil (or olive oil)

drizzle oil on chicken, sprinkle cayenne pepper and grill chicken. saute leeks (5 min), steam snap peas (3 min) and then use the same water to cook udon (7 min), drizzle oil on udon. Combine in a large bowl, add dressing, toss, garnish with sesame seeds and mango slices. serve immediately.

Mango Sesame Dressing:
3/4 cup vegetable oil (i used a little less)
3/4 cup mango chutney (or pureed mango slices)
6 tablespoons rice vinegar
3 garlic cloves (or spoon full of chopped garlic)
1 1/2 tablespoons sesame oil
1 1/2 dijon mustard
1 1/2 teaspoons crushed red pepper

combine in a blender, mix and chill (can be made up to 1 week in advance)

Claire's on Cedros

I love eggs. I love breakfast. I love when it's deliciously prepared with fresh ingredients. I love good decor. I love green practice. And I love eating amongst friends. Enter, Claire's on Cedros. Slightly north of the Solana Beach train station on Cedros Avenue, is the fantastic eatery, that I find myself most Saturday mornings (if I had the luxury to pop in every day, I would without a doubt). Claire's doubles as both a cafe and a bakery. They make most everything from scratch on site, including an entire selection of gluten free goods (muffins, breads, cookies, etc). This brought a smile to my friend's face this weekend, when she discovered she could have toast with her eggs. Claire's has a good breakfast selection, and the portions are big enough to satisfy a healthy appetite but not too large to overstuff. It's entirely too easy to eat an entire plate, but when everything is fresh, somehow even pancakes covered in chocolate chips and syrup feels healthy. My favorite dishes are the Caprese frittata (ricotta, arugula and the basil pesto) and the wild mushroom & roasted tomato omelet (brie, shallots and thyme).
Claire's took a sustainable menu (ie ingredients are grown on the property) and extended those values into their building. It is the first LEED Platinum restaurant in San Diego, a praised distinction. From materials to energy, every detail is well thought out with Mother Earth in mind. In addition, they just joined the Green Restaurant Association, and will run their business using sustainable practices (example, unless asked for, water is conserved, and not served).
A trip to Claire's is a delightful experience. Frequently there is a wait, but with complementary coffee, a ridiculously nice staff, a garden to peruse and a neighborhood of friendly locals to chat with, I really have nothing to complain about.

California Daze: Cardiff

Tonight, 20 August, from 5-10pm, the Green Flash Gallery is hosting an opening reception for "California Daze" art show. It includes a collection of artists: Susan Wickstrand, Kevin Roche, Ash Francomb, Julie Goldstein, Heather Brown, Matt Beard, Skye Walker, Liz Lantz, Kris Degrazio, and Ashton Howard. With an underlying theme between artists, many of the pieces echo water, movement, and the general surf culture. The Green Flash recently opened in the space previously occupied by Ebb and Flow. It should be a great gathering with local talent. Come mingle and soak in some culture!

Burgers & Brews: Simmzy's

You know you've found a good joint, when in a three day span you find yourself returning multiple times. In our last visit up to Manhattan Beach, we found ourselves, more than once, waiting in the ridiculously long lines for a seat at Simmzy's. Situated along the busy thoroughfare, Manhattan Beach Boulevard, with views of the pier, this relatively new pub is a bustling hot spot for beach goers and locals. With a quaint interior, open air dining and bar full of craft brews, it gets very busy and crowded and scoring a table takes patience. But, it's worth it. They have 24 rotating taps, with the beer list hand scrolled on a large chalkboard, so there is always something new to try (I had Alagash White). In addition to the beer (and a decent selection of wines), the food is fantastic. In the span of a weekend, I had the sesame crusted salmon sandwich, bacon blue deluxe burger and a grilled ahi salad. The menu includes locally grown and seasonal ingredients. Everything I ate, shared and sampled was delicious. Just as I was about to leave to come back to San Diego, I got a text from a friend, asking if I'd like to meet up at Simmzy's!

DIY centerpieces

Recently, we held a birthday dinner party on the Wine Steals patio in Cardiff-by-the-Sea. I decided that I wanted to steer away from the traditional bright decorations one could find somewhere like Party City, but instead, I wanted to have a sophisticated table setting with an adult modern flare. I needed something simple and had to assemble days in advance, so I was drawn to dried flower, twigs and rocks. I purchased the materials: short cylindrical vases, flexible twigs, variety of dried flowers in browns and yellows, and green and brown rocks. It seriously took a matter of 15 minutes to complete this project, and I was pleased with the results. The compliments at the party were an added bonus!

kate & birdie

I was window shopping this morning in Manhattan Beach and found this shelving ladder in a stationary store draped with awesome paper from Kate & Birdie. Not only would they make a package look amazing, but one could even frame a piece or adhere to a lamp shade. Kate & Birdie are a Chicago based paper company that produce original illustrations on recycled papers. And if you aren't lucky enough to stop into their studio, they have products available online at http://kateandbirdie.com
