irresistibly italian, vietri

i was in gar'den.ol.ogy in encinitas the other day with a girlfriend.  she was looking for accent pieces for her new coffee table in her formal living room.  while she picked through giant white coral and conch shells, i couldn't help admiring the beautiful table settings that they had staged.  the heavy white dishes reminded me of vietri, a US based company that imports italian handcrafted products.  while artisans craft pieces for both the home and garden, i particularly appreciate the collections of dinnerware.  my two favorite are the incanto (means enchanting individuality), made of terra marrone (brown clay),  and the bellezza (means beautiful), made of terra cotta.  with a large selection of pieces to mix and match, each unique detail compliments the others.  thick in cut and delicately shaped, the layers are revealed through glazing techniques and form, making the pieces quite sculptural.
